Philosophy inspired by travel…

As avid travelers, we’ve had great adventures over the years. Like anything else, travel is a skill, and having spent many months on the road in Europe, we’ve learned most lessons the hard way. But as a result, we know a lot about what we like, and what we don’t like, when we’re trying to absorb the culture of a new place. And those experiences have given birth to 3rd Street Flats.

One can make the argument that it doesn’t matter where you stay when you visit a new place—that it’s really just a place to lay your head after a busy day of seeing things. But that’s not our philosophy. Travel shouldn’t be about what you see, but about what you experience, and our best experiences have always come when we have rented apartments abroad.

From Portugal to Austria and many places in between, we have rented historic apartments by the night and felt the magic of melting into life in a place—of being able to experience it as if we actually lived there. Independent by nature, we love being able to come and go as we please, exploring a town or village on our own and finding that tucked away café that serves a great breakfast, or buying fresh local food at a market and cooking dinner ourselves.

3rd Street Flats is a reflection of this style of “immersion travel”. We’ve drawn on the best of all of our travels to make the Flats more than just a place to lay your head—to make it the place that defines your experience of Historic McMinnville and the Yamhill Valley. We want you to be able to drop into life here, and live like a local, even if only for a few days.

Because we believe travel should be on YOUR terms, not on ours, we want you to feel hosted, but without a host—so you’ll find local wine and chocolates waiting for you when you arrive, next to a guidebook covering the area.  We’ll point you in the right direction if you’re interested, but it’s up to you. If you’d like to explore on your own, ignore the books. You don’t have to talk with anyone if you don’t want to, and we won’t tell you what you have to eat for breakfast. This is your experience, and we think you’ll enjoy having the chance to choose your own adventure. . .

Thanks for staying with 3rd Street Flats!
